Ex01-04 Gas & Vapours

CompEx Ex01-04 provides candidates with the relevant training and practical assessments on the installation, maintenance and inspection of electrical and instrumental systems in a flammable gas, vapour or mist environment. Our training facilities are unique and custom built to include a realistic working environment and simulated hazardous areas. Courses will be given in small groups with a maximum group size of 6 candidates.

Course information and target audience

The qualification consists of four units, which cover the minimum requirements for safe working practices in hazardous locations. Candidates will learn about the safety considerations that should be applied to work areas that contain potentially explosive or flammable atmospheres and the factors that are used to classify their location.

The course includes instruction on how to read hazardous area certification, labelling and documentation, and also informs candidates about the main protection concepts, categories and levels that are applied to certified Ex electrical equipment.

Target audience are personnel with an electrical or instrumentation background who are involved in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation equipment for use in potentially hazardous areas. This course is also applicable for personnel from a non-Electrical or Instrumentation background who merely wish to establish an appreciation of Ex Hazardous Areas.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

  • Practicing competent electrical technicians

  • Practicing competent instrument technicians

  • Electrical/instrument engineers with previous practical experience

  • Prior CompEx certification supported by employer sponsored letter.

Key Learning Objectives

Identify the correct national regulations, directives and IEC standards which are applicable to hazardous locations.

Identify the correct criteria and descriptors used to classify a hazardous location.

Recognise the correct characteristics of common hazardous gases and vapours discussed during the course. Demonstrate an underpinning knowledge of how certified Ex electrical equipment including Ex ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘n’, ‘p’, ‘m’, ‘o’, ‘q’, ‘s’, Intrinsic Safety (IS) maintains its protection concept and how it is to be selected, installed, inspected and maintained. Identify the correct test value readings for IS and non-IS installations and equipment.

Ex 01

  • General principles of hazardous areas and non intrinsic safe installations

  • The preparation and installation of Ex ‘d’, ‘n’, ‘e’ and ‘p’ electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres

  • Standards, directives, certification and marking

  • Preparation and installation to IEC 60079-14

EX 02

  • General principles of hazardous areas and non intrinsic safe installations

  • The inspection and maintenance of Ex ‘d’, ‘n’, ‘e’ and ‘p’ electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres

  • Standards, directives, certification and marking

  • Inspection and maintenance to IEC 60079-17

EX 03

  • General principles of hazardous areas and intrinsically safe installations

  • The preparation and installation of Ex 'i' equipment and systems in explosive atmospheres

  • Standards, directives, certification and marking

  • Preparation and installation to IEC 60079-14

EX 04

  • General principles of hazardous areas and intrinsically safe installations

  • The inspection and maintenance of Ex 'i' equipment and systems in explosive atmospheres

  • Standards, directives, certification and marking

  • Inspection and maintenance to IEC 60079-17

Assessment

Assessment is undertaken using both practical assessments and an online examination that covers the four separate CompEx units. Successful candidates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to meet the requirements highlighted in the IEC 60079 series of standards and the relevant national standards and directives. This qualification focuses on the minimum specifications identified in IEC 60079-0, IEC 60079-10-1, IEC 60079-14 and IEC 60079-17.

Theory exam

Candidates must undertake a multiple-choice theory examination that consists of 60 questions answered over 1.5 hours.

Practical assessments:

Candidates are required to undertake four practical assessments (one per unit):

  • Ex01 – 3 hours 45 minutes

  • Ex02 – 1 hour 30 minutes

  • Ex03 – 3 hours

  • Ex04 – 1 hour 15 minutes

NOTE: Non Electrical or Instrumentation personnel can only be issued with a CSNV certification and not a full CompEx certificate.
